Strategic Behavior in Multi-unit Assignment Problems: Theory and Evidence from Course Allocations

چکیده
At Harvard Business School, like at many other professional schools around the country, students learning experience requires limits on the number of students in a class. This creates an interesting allocation problem for school administrations: students need a seat in several classes, and classes have limited capacity. In addressing this problem, all schools have some e¢ ciency and fairness objectives in mind.

The Multi-unit Assignment Problem: Theory and Evidence from Course Allocation at Harvard
We use theory and eld data to study the draft mechanism used to allocate courses at Harvard Business School. We show that the draft is manipulable in theory, manipulated in practice, and that these manipulations cause signi cant welfare loss. Nevertheless, we nd that welfare is higher than under its widely studied strategyproof alternative. We identify a new link between fairness and welfare ...
متن کاملThe Multi-unit Assignment Problem: Theory and Evidence from Course Allocation at Harvard
2237 Educational institutions commonly place limits on the number of students in any particular class. These class-size limits create an instance of the multi-unit assignment problem: if it is not possible for all students to take their most desired schedule of courses, then how should seats in courses be allocated? Other examples of multi-unit assignment problems include the assignment of task...
متن کاملA novel approach in robust group decision making for supply strategic planning
Long-term planning is a challenging process for dealing with problems in big industries. Quick and flexible process of responding to the existing variable requirements are considered in such problems. Some of important strategic decisions which should be made in this field are, namely the way that manufacturing facilities should be applied as well as assignment and design the system of delivery...
متن کاملRandom assignment with multi-unit demands
We consider the setting in which agents express preferences over objects, objects are allocated to agents based on the preferences, and there may be more objects than agents. In randomized settings, agents need to reason about their random allocations. The most well-established preference relation to compare random allocations of objects is stochastic dominance (SD). We present two impossibilit...
متن کاملA Game-Theoretical Pricing Mechanism for Multiuser Rate Allocation for Video over WiMAX
In multiuser rate allocation in a wireless network, strategic users can bias the rate allocation by misrepresenting their bandwidth demands to a base station, leading to an unfair allocation. Game-theoretical approaches have been proposed to address the unfair allocation problems caused by the strategic users. However, existing approaches rely on a timeconsuming iterative negotiation process. B...
